Who We Are

The Hatch Development Group (HDG) creates real estate developments in urban neighborhoods. HDG has developed mixed-income, affordable housing communities in the historic Sherman Hill Neighborhood and the East Village of Des Moines, and is expanding to the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood of Cedar Rapids. Since the beginning, HDG has maintained a commitment to increase the financial capacity of the inner-city. HDG’s principal, State Senator Jack Hatch, founded the Neighborhood Investment Corporation (NIC) and developed its first two multi-family, mixed-income apartment communities: the Woodland Avenue Brickstone and the East Village Square. Each project represents a commitment to providing beautiful, spacious and unique apartment living while adding substantial value to the neighborhood. NIC has a commitment to reinvest a portion of its net income back into the neighborhood within each project’s location.

HDG also developed the Alchemilla condominiums in the Sherman Hill Historic District, a neighborhood adjacent to the downtown business district. The Alchemilla consists of six-townhouses built as a Victorian-style mansion. Three units are still available for purchase.

HDG recently completed an ambitious rehabilitation of the historic Chamberlain Building at 1312 Locust on the edge of the newly created Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines. The redevelopment of 1312 Locust is sparking a revitalization of western downtown that will continue to expand with the addition of the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s new home office, and the expansion of Nationwide and Allied Insurance’s corporate headquarters. 1312 Locust is the new home for upscale restaurants and leading businesses seeking the high profile exposure that this great location offers.

Jack’s wife, Sonja Roberts, is the president of Perennial Properties, the property managers for HDG’s apartment communities. Perennial Properties provides a superior level of service to all residents and goes the extra mile to make your apartment feel like home.
