Developer Jack Hatch plans to invest nearly $7 million in building homes in north-central Des Moines in hopes of helping stabilize neighborhoods that have recently struggled with violence.

Hatch, a state senator, proposes building 26 homes with a unique rent-to-own feature for low-income families in the area just north of Interstate Highway 235 along Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway as well as in the King Irving, Drake Park and Sherman Hill neighborhoods.

Oak Hill Jackson Brickstones cited with national affordable-housing award

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Oak Hill Jackson Brickstones project has been recognized as the best affordable-housing tax-credit project in the nation built as part of a community’s disaster recovery.

The award for the two new apartment buildings on Sixth Street SE comes from the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition. The coalition recognized a project in each of seven categories from among 48 applicants in 21 states.

Jack Hatch and Ryan Galloway are teaming up to construct 18 affordable-housing units in central Des Moines.

The partnership, MLK Brickstone LP, is a joint venture between Hatch, owner of Hatch Development Group LLC, and Galloway, a Hatch employee who owns the proposed development site. The 18-unit build-out at 1039 19th St. is phase one of the developer’s overall plan for 59 low-income apartments in the 1000 block of 19th Street.

Des Moines developer Jack Hatch hopes to build single family homes on seven city owned lots in the vicinity of Interstate Highway 235 and Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway.

Westgate to redevelop Kruidenier building for office user

Westgate Partnership LLC kicked off its redevelopment of the Kruidenier Cadillac Automobile Co. Building last week after signing a new tenant and securing funds to tackle the multimillion-dollar project.

Advertising agency Flynn Wright is slated to occupy about 14,000 square feet of the 91-year-old building, following a nearly 10-month long negotiation process that included owners, brokers, bankers, architects and other stakeholders.
